The Secret to Furnishing Your Child’s Dollhouse

Playing with dollhouses has provided endless hours of imaginative fun for children throughout generations.  It has also become many a collector’s obsession, with thousands of adults now listing themselves as “official dollhouse fanatics” who seek out the latest trend in children’s dollhouse furniture and decorations.  Although there are many ways that a parent or hobbyist can spend lots of money decorating their dollhouse, there are also many creative ways to craft decorations from household items that cost nothing.

Assembling Children’s Dollhouse Furniture From Kits:  Building children’s dollhouse furniture from kits is not very difficult.  Kits are available at craft stores and come with easy-to-understand assembly instructions.  Kits usually include pre-cut furniture pieces that can either be fit or glued together.  To make the furniture look more real, you can either stain it with a wood stain or paint it.  Once the furniture is assembled, you can glue on the accessories such as knobs and handles to give the furniture a more realistic look.  The fun really begins when you start to place the furniture in the individual rooms of the dollhouse.

Making Children’s Dollhouse Furniture Using Simple Household Items:  With a little ingenuity, you can make children’s dollhouse furniture using simple items found around the house.
Beds can be made using empty cheese boxes turned upside down, using a layer of batting on top covered with a piece of fabric for the mattress.

You can also make a headboard using painted craft sticks cut to fit the size of the bed.  Glue them side-by-side and paint to match your dollhouse décor.
Tables can be made using the little plastic stands that are placed on the middle of boxed pizzas to keep the cover off the top of the pizza.  You can make tiny tablecloths with fabric scraps.
Curtains and Rugs are easy to make with pieces of fabric, small carpet scraps or portions of crocheted doilies.
Drawers can be made using matchboxes.  To make a chest of drawers, glue together 2 or 3 matchboxes stacked on each other, painted or covered with woodgrain contact paper.  Small colored beads can be glued on as knobs for the drawers.
Trash Cans are easy to make from narrow hairspray or aerosol can covers.  You can add small bits of crumpled paper into them to make them look real.
Decorations such as pictures and photographs can give your dollhouse a finishing touch.  Cut small pictures from magazines to hang on the walls of the dollhouse.  Using small matchsticks, you can glue them around a picture to simulate a frame.

There is no limit to the number of decorative items you can make to enhance the look of the children’s dollhouse furniture in your prized dollhouse.  Take your time, use your imagination and have fun!
